Aims of the Course:

The course is being developed in line with authority recommendations, local improvement objectives and national priorities.   It is hoped that a suitable placement con be secured through Careers Scotland to enhance professional development and business 1 public sector links.   The Social Awareness Development unit focuses on projects that sit well with our Eco Schools and SSSP programmes.   For example, the students are currently trying to source agreeing vendor which sells only products which are free from artificial additives / low in fat and sugar / are 'Fair Trade'.

2.   Contribute to sustainability in our school and community:
'Active Citizenship' students are the driving force` behind the school's Eco Schools programme and they work co operatively with other groups within the school, assisting in the implementation of SSSP targets.   (Alford Academy is one of the pilot schools in the Sustainable Secondary Schools Partnership.) Links are being developed with a variety of agencies so that partnerships can be developed and expertise put to good effect.   For example, contacts with private companies and public services with an interest in environmental management are being progressed.   We share developments and student involvement in environment and enterprise education with the local community through newsletters, local press and participation in community activities.  We actively encourage community involvement and consider interaction between external agencies and students to be very important part of learning and personal development processes.

3.   To provide positive, participative learning experiences for all students involved in the varied Projects within the course and beyond:
Students have a real say in the direction in which the course develops and are encouraged to build on their own personal and interpersonal skills to make a difference to the way we operate within the school and for the good of the environment.   In addition, they will take part in a work experience placement of their choice and / or work with others to plan, carry out and review an enterprise activity.
