FITA: Fish Industry Training Association Pilot Course

Mallaig Marine Training Centre

Context:

This was a pilot 3 week residential training course based at Mallaig Marine Training Centre set up by fishermen to meet the need for new entrants to the industry.

Aims:

To provide pre -sea training for potential fishermen in an area with no local college- based courses.

To encourage new entrants from non- traditional fishing areas to help sustain the future of the industry

Target – group:

Male / female school –leavers/ pupils (must be 16 +) or others interested in working in the industry.

How the course runs:

Week 1 – Theory including net-mending, navigation etc

bullet

Week 2 – mandatory courses including sea survival, fire and first aid and safety awareness.

Week 3 – work placement on board a vessel going to sea for a trip.

Trainers:

Professional fishermen –all ex-skippers

RYA Instructor

Qualifications:

bullet

No formal qualification but elements are relevant to SVQ Level2.

Assessed in –house.

Health and Safety:

bullet

Insurance through the boat.

bullet

Risk assessment for sea survival (in pool)

bullet

Live fires training (very controlled)

Feedback from pilot course has been extremely positive. It is hoped to run the course on a regular basis.
