Rural Skills at Portree High School

Contact person: Mrs Ann Robertson (DHT) 01478612030

Context:

The Rural Skills programme was designed to meet the needs of disaffected pupils and ‘Christmas Leavers’.   It is very like the Princes Trust xl Clubs but for an older age group.   An alternative title was suggested in planning – “Enterprise, Citizenship and Environment”

The programme is set up to meet the needs of pupils on Skye but could be adapted anywhere.
It is embedded in the S5/6 course choices and whilst not wholly ‘rural’ skills it is realistic to current school systems.

Awards:

The main award is through the John Muir Award.

Difficulties:

Not easy to organise and relies on teachers to opt-in to help - ‘lots of people giving a little time’ – but there is a lot of enthusiasm for the programme.
