Amsterdam

Themes:   Relationships / Social Issues

Amsterdam by Ian McEwan

Molly Lane, "wonderful woman" and lover with many admirers dies quickly of a strange mental illness.   Her lovers are drawn together for the funeral and in this tantalizing and witty tale, the musician, the newspaper editor and the politician interact in social and political intrigue, revolving around the deceased Molly.  The shallowness and ineffectiveness of the main characters becomes increasingly apparent.  Written in economical style, with succinct dialogue, Amsterdam is outrageous and dryly humourous, touching on morality, death and social manipulation.

A short book, tableau of a social set, and winner of the Booker prize, 1998
