A story of the Sommers family, prosperous traders in 1830s Chile, and of Eliza, the strong-willed foundling they have adopted.   When Eliza runs away north to seek her lover among the men who have followed the Californian Gold Rush, the respectable façade of the Sommers household slips to reveal the secret of her birth.
