Profile:

  • Born in Nagasaki, Japan, 1954

  • Moved to Britain in 1960

  • Obtained BA (Honours) in 1978 from the University of Kent and MA from the University of East Anglia in 1980

  • Began writing in 1981 and published his first novel in 1982, A Pale View of Hills

  • The Remains of the Day won the Booker Prize in 1989

  • His novels have been translated into 28 different languages
