Bernard MacLaverty

 

Profile:

  • Born in Belfast, 1942

  • Worked for 10 years as a medical laboratory technician

  • Graduated from Queen's University, Belfast in 1974 and qualified as a teacher

  • In 1975, MacLaverty and his family moved to Scotland

  • Taught in Edinburgh for three years before taking up another teaching post on the Isle of Islay

  • In 1981, he gave up teaching to become a full-time writer

  • Grace Notes  was short listed for the Booker Prize (1997)

  • Grace Notes won the Saltire Society Scottish Book of the Year Award (1997)
