  • Born in 1948

  • Spent his childhood in Aldershot, Singapore, Tripoli and Woolverstone Hall (state - run boarding school)

  • Graduated from Sussex University and then took an MA creative writing course at the University of East Anglia

  • Published First love, Last Rites, a volume of short stories, in 1975 and won the Somerset Maughan Award

  • Won the Booker Prize in 1998 with Amsterdam

  • Ian McEwan lives in Oxford
