Never Let Me Go by Kazua Ishiguro

This compelling story of three young people growing up and facing adult life is thought-provoking because of the unexpected nature of their identity and destiny.   The central truth is revealed gradually as the characters begin to really understand what they have been “told, yet not told” in childhood.   These children have no parents and are destined for a future of gothic horror proportions, set in contemporary England.   We see relationships developing, yet are at first unaware of the scenario.   Ishiguro skilfully explores his theme in a simple style of storytelling, which makes the morality and ethics of his world all the more shocking.   Highly recommended.

Possible areas for study:
• How does Ishiguro make this novel emotionally convincing?
• Theme, Genre, Setting.
