The story is set during the Second World War, Alice has been kept hidden by her family and is unaware of what is happening to Jews in her hometown in Germany.  But, she and her family, are discovered and sent to a concentration camp.   On the journey she begins to realise why she was kept in hiding for so long and what it means to be a Jew in Germany at this time.
