Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes
Published by Gollancz

A bakery assistant with learning difficulties is chosen for a pioneering medical experiment which leads to a dramatic increase in his intelligence.   Initially the Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes experiment seems to be a great success, but questions arise about how to control this growing intelligence and about the connection between intelligence and human happiness.  The ending is both shocking and predictable.
