Inventing Elliot by
Graham Gardner
Published by Orion
An earnest exploration of a
young boy’s struggle for identity in his new school. Previously a
victim of horrendous bullying, Eliott is determined not to draw
attention to himself in any way in his new school. Ironically by
trying so hard not to get
noticed
in the "wrong way", Elliot is identified by the sinister older pupils
who are the Guardians, as exactly the kind of boy they are looking
for. Friendship with Ben and Louise, and the violent assault
experienced by his Dad lead Elliot to make a very costly choice at the
end of this gripping novel. Inventing Elliot is a menacing book about
bully and victim, survival and conscience, yet also has a romance, and
family relationship dimension. A highly recommended first novel. |
