Set mostly in New Orleans in 1910. Toby is one of a troupe of actors from London. On a stormy night they ask for shelter at a house in the country, and are asked to perform for a young woman, Isabelle, and her nurse, who seem to be the only people living there. They put on Malvolio’s Revenge a play written years before by Toby’s Uncle Theo as a sequel to Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. Isabelle offers to introduce them to someone who will enable them to put on the play in New Orleans, and she and her nurse go with them. However, Isabelle is bent on revenge for her parents’ death, and Toby finds himself involved in helping her.
