Skin by A M Vrettos
Published by Egmont
Written
from the perspective of her younger brother, this is a book about a girl who
stops eating. Donnie doesn’t know what to do, so, to allow Karen to get the help
she needs, so he pretends he is isn’t there. People don’t notice him, either at
home or at school. He is invisible, apart from his skin.
The very first chapter tells us the outcome of Karen’s anorexia; the rest of the
story deals with Donnie’s attempts to come to terms with what happens. Nothing
is ever discussed with him, but he sees and feels plenty.
This book is heart-rending, giving a perspective into what goes on behind the
scenes – does this family bring its problems upon itself – or could this happen
to anyone?
